The Road to Mongolia: Kenya renews commitment to Sustainable Rangeland Management and Pastoral Development

80 per cent of Kenya's landmass is rangelands that is about 40 million hectares, approximately the size of the Republic of Paraguay. Rangelands host about 70 per cent of the country's livestock and 85 per cent of its wildlife, a lifeline for both livestock and tourism sectors. More than one-third of the population, pastoralist, live in the rangelands. Pastoralists are custodians of rangelands whose knowledge, institutions and practices are critical to achieving sustainable development and environmental conservation.

Yet, Kenya's rangelands continue to face growing threats arising from climate change, recurrent droughts, land degradation, fragmentation of grazing lands and livestock mobility corridors, invasive species, insecure land tenure, resource-based conflicts, human-wildlife conflict, weak policy implementation, inadequate investment, and limited recognition of pastoralism within national planning, financing and statistical systems.
